Plasma cell
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013405
A terminally differentiated B lymphocyte that has largely lost surface immunoglobulin and secretes large amounts of antibody of a single specificity. It has an eccentric nucleus and abundant rough endoplasmic reticulum, and it divides little or not at all. Short-lived plasma cells in lymphoid tissue survive for days to weeks, while long-lived ones in bone marrow can persist for years and maintain antibody levels after infection or vaccination.
