pro-E, pro-Z

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009512

Stereodescriptors used to distinguish between two identical ligands on a trigonal carbon atom that, if replaced by a different group, would lead to E or Z stereoisomers, respectively. These designations are assigned based on the Cahn-Ingold-Prelog priority rules. For example, in a molecule like CH2=CH-CH2X, the two hydrogens on the CH2 group can be pro-E or pro-Z.
