Pyrolysis-gas chromatography
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009708
An analytical technique where a sample is thermally decomposed in an inert atmosphere (pyrolysis) to produce smaller, more volatile fragments, which are then immediately separated by gas chromatography. The sample is heated rapidly to a specific temperature in a pyrolyzer connected to the gas chromatograph's injection port. The resulting chromatogram, or pyrogram, provides a characteristic fingerprint of the original material's composition, and is used to identify polymers, paints, and other non-volatile complex mixtures.
