Pyrolytic carbon
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009709
A form of carbon laid down from gaseous hydrocarbons by chemical vapour deposition on a heated substrate, at temperatures from roughly 1000 to 2500 K (about 700 to 2200 °C). Its microstructure ranges from isotropic to lamellar depending on temperature, gas concentration and flow rate. Low-temperature isotropic grades are dense and blood compatible, and coat mechanical heart valve leaflets.
