Random coincidence

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009917

The simultaneous detection of two or more unrelated events by a coincidence counting system, occurring purely by chance. This happens when two or more particles or photons arrive at different detectors within the resolving time of the system, even though they originated from independent decay events. It contributes to background noise in nuclear measurements and must be accounted for in quantitative analysis.
