Resonance ion ejection

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010252

A technique for selectively removing ions from an ion trap mass spectrometer by applying a supplementary alternating current voltage to the trap's electrodes. When the frequency of this applied voltage matches the natural oscillation frequency (secular frequency) of an ion with a specific mass-to-charge ratio, its motion becomes unstable. The ion's oscillation amplitude increases until it is expelled from the trapping field and can be detected or discarded.
