Scavenger receptor

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013525

A cell surface receptor, found chiefly on macrophages, dendritic cells and some endothelial cells, that recognizes and takes up a broad range of molecules and particles needing clearance from the body, such as oxidized or acetylated low-density lipoprotein, apoptotic cells and bacteria. Ligands are often polyanionic, and uptake of modified lipoprotein is not shut down by rising cellular cholesterol, which contributes to foam cell formation in atherosclerosis.
