Segment
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010660
A defined, discrete portion of a material being sampled, or a discrete volume of liquid within a flowing stream in automated analysis. In segmented flow analysis, a segment of sample is separated from other segments by air bubbles to prevent dispersion and cross-contamination as it moves through the system towards a detector. This contrasts with flow injection analysis, where the sample plug is injected directly into an unsegmented carrier stream and dispersion is controlled by flow dynamics.
