Sequential spectrometer

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010769

An instrument that measures the intensity of radiation at a series of different wavelengths or frequencies one after another in a timed sequence. A single detector is used, and the dispersing element, such as a grating or prism, is rotated or moved to present each wavelength to the detector's exit slit. This design contrasts with a simultaneous spectrometer, which uses multiple detectors to measure many wavelengths at once.
