Dispersive spectrometer

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003312

An instrument that spreads polychromatic light into its component wavelengths with a prism or a diffraction grating and then measures the separated radiation. The wavelengths are read out either one after another with a single detector behind a slit or all at once with an array detector. UV-visible and infrared spectrometers are common examples, in contrast to Fourier-transform instruments, which obtain the spectrum from an interferogram.
