Sibling

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013550

One of two or more individuals born to the same pair of parents, in contrast to a half-sibling, who shares only one parent. Full siblings share on average half of their genes by descent, so in toxicological and genetic studies they serve as matched controls or as subjects for estimating the heritability of a trait or the familial clustering of a response to chemical exposure. Half-siblings share on average a quarter.
