Smog chamber

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010958

A large, enclosed environmental chamber used to simulate and study the chemical and physical processes that lead to the formation of photochemical smog. Researchers introduce specific concentrations of pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds, into the chamber and irradiate the mixture with artificial sunlight. The interior surfaces are made of inert materials like Teflon film to minimize wall reactions that could interfere with the gas-phase chemistry being studied.
