Chamber saturation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012964

The condition in a chromatography chamber where the atmosphere is saturated with the vapor of the mobile phase. This state is achieved by placing a solvent pool at the bottom of the chamber or by lining the chamber walls with filter paper soaked in the solvent. Maintaining chamber saturation prevents the mobile phase from evaporating from the chromatographic plate during development, which would otherwise alter the separation efficiency.
