Startle reflex

An involuntary, rapid, and widespread motor response to an unexpected, intense sensory stimulus, such as a loud sound or sudden visual change. This reflex is mediated by neural pathways in the brainstem and involves a characteristic pattern of muscle contractions. It is a protective mechanism that can be modulated by an individual's emotional state.
