Symmetrical films

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013627

A thin fluid film whose two bounding phases are the same, so the film phase is flanked by identical media on both sides, as in a soap film, a water layer in air written A/W/A, or an oil layer in water, W/O/W. In the three-letter notation for fluid films the first and last letters match. An unsymmetrical film has different neighbours, such as an oil layer sandwiched between water on one side and air on the other.
