Silver film

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013557

A thin transparent film, such as a liquid soap film, whose thickness is of the order of 100 nanometres, so that seen by reflected white light over a dark backdrop it looks white or silvery. Thicker films show the interference colours of thin plates, and thinner ones turn grey and then black. The appearance lets the film thickness be estimated.
