Black film

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001356

A thin liquid film that appears black when viewed by reflected light because its thickness is much smaller than the wavelength of visible light, causing destructive interference between light reflected from its front and back surfaces. These films form as a liquid lamella, such as in a soap bubble, thins by drainage. A Newton black film is a specific type where the two surfaces are in close contact, with a thickness of about 5 nanometers.
