Tetrodotoxin
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011908
A potent neurotoxin produced by certain marine organisms, such as pufferfish and blue-ringed octopuses, that selectively blocks voltage-gated sodium channels in nerve cell membranes. This blockade prevents the generation and propagation of action potentials, leading to paralysis and respiratory failure. It is a non-protein toxin with a molecular formula of C11H17N3O8.
