Node of Ranvier

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013337

A periodic gap in the myelin sheath along an axon, where the axonal membrane is exposed to the extracellular space. These unmyelinated regions are rich in voltage-gated ion channels, which enable the rapid propagation of action potentials through saltatory conduction. Nodes of Ranvier are typically about 1 micrometer in length.
