Ultrafiltration
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012394
A membrane separation process that uses hydrostatic pressure to force liquids through a semi-permeable membrane, retaining suspended solids and high molecular weight solutes. This technique is employed for purifying and concentrating macromolecules, such as proteins, from solutions. The pore sizes of ultrafiltration membranes typically range from 1 to 100 nanometers.
