Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012412
The chemical modification of a functional group to reverse its inherent polarity. This synthetic strategy transforms a group that is normally an electrophile into a nucleophile, or vice versa, enabling otherwise inaccessible bond formations. For instance, the electrophilic carbon of an aldehyde is converted into a nucleophilic center through the formation of a dithiane, which can then be deprotonated and alkylated.
