Upper critical solution temperature

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012460

The critical temperature above which a binary mixture, such as a polymer and a solvent, forms a single phase at every composition. Compositions inside the coexistence curve below it split into two phases. This behaviour belongs to mixtures with a positive, endothermic enthalpy of mixing, where the entropy gain wins as temperature rises, and for polymers the UCST increases with molar mass toward the theta temperature.
