Uterotrophic assay

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012478

A rodent bioassay for estrogenic substances in which immature or ovariectomized female rats or mice are dosed with the test chemical for several days, commonly three, and the uterus is then weighed. A statistically supported rise in uterine weight over vehicle controls indicates estrogenic activity, while antiestrogenic activity is tested by dosing together with a reference estrogen and looking for a reduced weight gain. OECD Test Guideline 440 standardizes the procedure.
