Zwitterions
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012824
Neutral molecules that possess both positive and negative formal charges on different atoms within the same molecule. These compounds are dipolar but have no net electrical charge. Amino acids, for instance, exist as zwitterions in aqueous solution at physiological pH, with a protonated amino group and a deprotonated carboxyl group.
