Lost neutral

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-003438

An electrical fault condition where the neutral conductor, which provides the return path for current in an AC power system, becomes disconnected or broken. This creates a dangerous floating neutral, causing unpredictable and severe voltage imbalances across the different phases of a multi-phase system. In a split-phase 120/240V service, a lost neutral can subject 120V appliances to voltages approaching 240V, leading to their immediate destruction.
