Chain rule
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004244
A fundamental rule of calculus for differentiating a composite function, which is a function of another function. The rule states that the derivative of f(g(x)) is the derivative of f with respect to g multiplied by the derivative of g with respect to x. This principle is applied extensively in atmospheric models for tasks like coordinate transformations and calculating the total derivative of a variable following fluid motion.
