Gradient-based similarity theory

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006021

A similarity approach for the stably stratified atmospheric boundary layer in which the scaling variables are built from the vertical gradients of mean wind and potential temperature, rather than from the turbulent fluxes of momentum and heat used in Monin-Obukhov theory. Results are organized by the gradient Richardson number, and the approach suits very stable conditions, where turbulence is weak and fluxes are hard to measure. It was developed largely by Zbigniew Sorbjan.
