Nevada

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010643

A strong, cold, and often dust-laden wind that descends from the Andes mountains into the valleys and plains of Ecuador. This katabatic wind occurs when cold, dense air from high elevations flows downslope under the influence of gravity, warming adiabatically as it descends but remaining cold relative to the air in the lowlands. The nevada is similar in character to other mountain winds like the Foehn, but it is distinguished by its coldness and the dust it frequently carries.
