Radiation pressure

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008302

The force exerted per unit area on any surface exposed to electromagnetic radiation, resulting from the transfer of momentum carried by photons. This pressure is extremely small but can influence the motion of small atmospheric particles, such as aerosols and ice crystals, and is a factor in the dynamics of planetary atmospheres. The magnitude of radiation pressure from direct sunlight on a perfectly absorbing surface at Earth's distance from the sun is approximately 4.5 micropascals.
