Randomness

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008397

The quality or state of lacking any predictable pattern or order. In atmospheric science, randomness is inherent in many processes, such as turbulent air motion, the formation of individual cloud droplets, and the precise timing of lightning strikes. While deterministic models attempt to predict atmospheric behavior, the chaotic nature of the atmosphere means that some aspects will always exhibit elements of randomness, particularly at small scales.
