To stop production from a well by closing the surface valves on the christmas tree, halting the flow of hydrocarbons to the surface facilities. A well is closed in for reasons such as scheduled maintenance, pipeline capacity constraints, unfavorable market prices, or to manage reservoir pressure. The well remains capable of production and can be brought back online by reopening the valves, unlike a permanently plugged and abandoned well.
