Hydrogen blistering

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001909

A form of hydrogen-induced damage in steel, where atomic hydrogen diffuses into the metal and recombines to form molecular hydrogen gas at internal defects or inclusions. The trapped hydrogen gas creates high internal pressures, leading to the formation of blisters or bulges on the metal surface. This phenomenon is common in sour service environments containing hydrogen sulfide.
