Joint
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002076
A natural fracture or crack in a rock along which no discernible displacement has occurred, distinguishing it from a fault. Joints form in sets, which are groups of parallel fractures that result from tectonic stress, cooling of igneous rock, or the unloading of overlying material through erosion. The orientation and spacing of joint sets are measured in outcrop studies and from borehole image logs to predict fracture patterns in subsurface reservoirs.
