Mute

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004391

To zero out portions of a seismic record that are dominated by noise or unwanted coherent events, preventing them from contaminating later processing steps. A top mute is applied to remove the direct arrival and refractions that precede the reflection data, while a bottom mute can remove noise at late times and large offsets. The mute function is defined by a polygon of time and offset coordinates applied to a seismic gather.
