Over travel
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002654
A condition in sucker rod pumping where the stroke of the downhole pump plunger is longer than the polished rod stroke at the surface. It results from dynamic effects, as the acceleration of the moving rod string carries the plunger past the point set by the surface stroke, and it partly offsets the rod stretch that shortens the plunger stroke. Its opposite is undertravel, where stretch under fluid load leaves the plunger stroke shorter.
