Downstroke

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001159

The downward movement of the sucker rod string and pump plunger in a rod pumping cycle. During the downstroke the traveling valve opens, letting fluid in the barrel pass through the plunger, while the standing valve closes to keep that fluid from returning to the well. The next upstroke then lifts the fluid above the plunger toward the surface.
