Piston effect
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002808
The force exerted on a drill string or tubing string by differential pressure acting across a change in cross-sectional area, such as a packer or a restriction in the wellbore. This force can cause the string to move axially, either upward or downward, if not properly managed. It is calculated by multiplying the pressure differential by the cross-sectional area of the pipe.
