Radioactive tracer
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003036
A small quantity of a radioactive isotope added to a fluid stream to follow its movement or reveal flow paths in a well or reservoir. Gamma-emitting isotopes such as iodine-131, iridium-192 and scandium-46 can be detected by logging tools, giving fluid velocity, injection profiles or communication between wells. Tritium emits only beta particles, so it is traced by sampling produced fluids and counting them in a laboratory.
