An indication of the presence of oil or gas in the drilling fluid or cuttings returning to the surface, observed during drilling operations. These indications include oil staining or fluorescence in cuttings under ultraviolet light, gas bubbles in the mud, or elevated gas readings from mud logging sensors. A show prompts further evaluation but does not by itself confirm a commercially productive reservoir.
