Viscous fingering
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004054
An instability that occurs during fluid displacement in porous media when a less viscous fluid displaces a more viscous fluid. The displacing fluid forms channels or 'fingers' through the displaced fluid, bypassing portions of the reservoir and leading to inefficient sweep efficiency. This phenomenon is common in waterflooding or gas injection into heavy oil reservoirs.
