Fingering
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001422
An instability phenomenon where the displacing fluid penetrates the displaced fluid in narrow channels or 'fingers' rather than moving as a uniform front. This occurs when the displacing fluid has lower viscosity or density than the displaced fluid, leading to poor sweep efficiency in enhanced oil recovery processes. It reduces the contact between the injected fluid and the oil, thereby lowering recovery.
