Whole-mud dilution
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004158
A way of lowering solids concentration, and with it density and viscosity, by discarding part of the circulating mud and replacing it with fresh base fluid and chemicals, so the whole mud is diluted instead of being treated only by solids-control equipment. It is used when mechanical solids removal cannot hold drilled solids at the target. It becomes costly in oil-based and synthetic muds, where discarded mud carries expensive base fluid.
