Adventitious carbon referencing

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000298

A method used in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to correct for charging effects on insulating samples by setting the binding energy of the C 1s peak from adventitious carbon to a fixed value, typically 284.8 eV or 285.0 eV. This approach assumes that the adventitious carbon is electrically coupled to the sample surface and experiences the same charging. It provides a convenient internal reference for energy scale calibration.
