Antagonism
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000650
A situation in which the combined toxic effect of two or more chemicals is less than the sum of their individual effects when administered separately. In toxicology, this interaction results in a reduction of the expected toxicity. For example, functional antagonism occurs when two chemicals produce opposite effects on the same physiological function, while chemical antagonism involves a reaction between the substances that neutralizes one or both.
