Bowsprit

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001455

One of the two kinds of exocyclic bond on the end carbons of the boat conformation of cyclohexane. At each end of the boat, the carbon that sits above the mean ring plane carries a bowsprit bond, which points outward roughly parallel to that plane, and a flagpole bond, which points upward and toward the other end. Flagpole substituents on the two ends crowd each other, one reason the boat is less stable than the chair.
