Brillouin index

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001504

A measure of the species diversity of a community, calculated as the natural logarithm of N factorial minus the sum of the logarithms of the factorials of the species counts, divided by N, the count of all individuals in the collection. It is the suitable choice when the collection is a complete census or was not sampled randomly, whereas the Shannon index assumes a random sample. Evenness is estimated as the ratio of the index to its maximum possible value.
