Cellulation
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001787
A growth-front instability in polymer crystallization in which the edge of a fast-growing lamella, or of a bundle of lamellae, breaks into diverging cells because non-crystallizing or slowly crystallizing chains rejected by the crystal accumulate ahead of it. The rejected material ends up trapped in gaps between the cells and at the borders of the spherulite. It is the polymer counterpart of cellular growth seen when impure metals solidify.
