Cervical spine

The uppermost portion of the vertebral column, situated in the neck between the skull and the thoracic spine. It is composed of seven distinct vertebrae, designated C1 through C7, which enclose and protect the spinal cord. The first two vertebrae, the atlas (C1) and the axis (C2), are specialized to permit a greater range of motion for the head than other spinal regions.
