Channeling effect
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001874
A phenomenon in which an energetic, well-collimated ion or electron beam aligned with a principal axis or plane of a single crystal penetrates farther than in an amorphous solid, because the interaction cross sections with the lattice atoms drop sharply. The effect cuts the backscattering yield from a well-ordered crystal to a few percent of the random-direction value, which Rutherford backscattering spectrometry uses to assess crystal quality.
