Channeling
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001873
The phenomenon where incident ions or electrons penetrate deeper into a crystalline solid along specific crystallographic directions than they would in an amorphous material. This occurs because the open channels between atomic planes offer less resistance to the incoming particles. Channeling effects are exploited in techniques like Rutherford backscattering spectrometry to determine crystal quality.
